Poltava Kilim
This lovely carpet is a beautiful example of this underrated group of East European weavings. Woven in the Poltava region of Eastern Ukraine, it exemplifies the Ukrainian folk tradition. Delicately drawn floral ornaments around a central wreath are all oven in light joyful colours. The gold border with more floral ornaments complements the field. Note the wonderful weaving technique which resembles tapestry weaving more than traditional kilims. Indeed the influence for this fine piece is western European decorative art. Cherished through the generations in the Ukraine where these pieces were often hung on walls rather than used as floorcoverings, it has survived in very good condition. Ready for immediate use.
