'Halvai' Bidjar Kellei

his handsome carpet is from a group often referred to as 'Halvai' Bidjars. The origin of this term is not clear, but it refers to a group of Kurdish weavings from the town of Bidjar in West Persia which preceded the commercial period production of the late 19th century. Technically, they stand out too with a fine weave, non-depressed warps and wool foundations. This carpet which has been woven in the 'kellei' format is a lovely example. The design is composed of offset rows of miniature botehs in different sizes and colours which seem to sway in kaleidoscopic waves. The effect is quite mesmerising. The colours are subtle and harmonious, beginning with the caramel background in the field with secondary colours such as pale and dark blues, golds and reds, makes the carpet very easy on the eye. The borders are also charming with rows of rosettes and other floral elements, all on a lovely sapphire blue background. With a low clipped pile, the design has very clear definition which is enhanced by the even wear commensurate with its age.
