Salt-Bag, Baluch Nomads
I find this salt-bag -'namakdan' in Persian - visually exciting. The zig-zags symbolically conjures up flowing water - one of the most important things in nomadic life or life as a whole, along with salt and bread. The purpose of the salt-bag was to hold rock-salt which was given to the animals during long migrations, in order to help in the dehydration process. Salt-bags might also contain pistachio nuts, almonds etc. This bag was woven by Baluch nomads in western Afghanistan.
