Malayer

Despite my preference for tribal rugs I have always liked the rugs from the regions around Hamadan. Malayer rugs show the characteristics one would expect to see from this region with cotton foundations and a single weft between each row of knots. They are however finer than their neighbours and can have a high knot count. I also find them to be very decorative especially this type with a bright red and allover herati design. The central medallion pops out from the centre like a flower opening. The soft green is a welcome contrast to the red, note how the medallion is flanked by leaves that curl around and burst into flowers at each corner. A very decorative and delightful rug in my view.
Origin: Persia
Size: 200 x 125 cm
Date: Early 20th C
Condition: Good condition. The pile is quite short allover and the synthetic red has bled in a few places but not to the detriment of the overall look.
Price: £700.00
