Fine Verdure Tapestry

Probably woven in the Aubusson or Felletin workshops in the early 18th century. Wool and silk. The design depicts a country landscape with luscious foliage, a running stream, birds and two Chinese-style pagodas. Chinoiserie was very much in vogue during this period. The scene is framed by an elegant acanthus leaf border. Exquisite colours, especially a liberal use of red which brings the composition to life.
Origin: France
Size: 285 x 330 cm
Date: Circa 1700
Condition: Cherished over the generations, it has had scattered repairs but retains its true character. It has recently been professionally cleaned and has a new linen lining. Ready for immediate use.
