Ivory Ground Heriz Carpet

This is a very charming small Heriz carpet which dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. It has a rare ivory background with repeating geometric ornaments in very subtle shades of pale blue, green, gold and salmon. All the colours are the derived from natural sources. The sapphire blue border is also attractive with repeating palmettes and stylised tendrils. The carpet feels very rustic in its drawing. The addition of a few small animal ornaments also gives the impression that this carpet may have been made in a cottage industry situation. The unusually small carpet size may also be an indication that originally it was woven for domestic use. It's a really charming carpet.
