Poltava Kilim

Often referred to as 'Bessarabian' kilims, we can state with confidence that this group of floral kilims with fine wool and extensive use of curved or 'eccentric' wefts were woven in neighbouring Ukraine. This piece comes from the Poltava region of Eastern Ukraine and dates to around 1890. It is characterised by the very sophisticated weaving technique which is visible in the close-up images, and by the charmingly simple design. This piece in particular is quite painterly. The design elements are drawn in a quirky manner, asymmetrically. Note the sense of movement in the borders, and the difference between the short borders and the long borders. One can imagine a talented weaver making this piece for her own use. In addition, it is a lovely little size and would work in many kinds of settings. Minor repairs but generally good condition. Professionally cleaned.
