Ukrainian Tapestry Kilim

The rustic drawing and weave suggest this kilim was woven in domestic setting away from the the craft workshops of Poltava. However, it is a charming piece, with an array of delightful colours and a beautifully composed interpretation of the classic design of repeating shrubs and flowering urns on a charcoal background. Note how each shrub or vase is slightly different, a true sign of thoughtful craftsmanship. Note too the lovely pale blue floral border which frames the central field. The technique is typically Ukrainian with interlocking warps and the use of eccentric or curved wefts to create texture and depth. Another feature is the deliberate abrash in the charcoal background and in the border which adds to the sense of depth. This piece was undoubtedly woven to be hung, and has survived in excellent condition. Today, it would make a delightful wall hanging or floor covering and would enhance any decorate setting, contemporary or traditional.
